History of the College

The college of physical and applied sciences (COLPAS) was created out of the defunct college of Natural and Applied sciences in November 2012. On that day, the senate of the university at its 148th Regular Meeting, approved the demerging of the defunct college of Natural and applied sciences into two separate colleges. At the inception of the university in 1993, the college was known as the college of biological and physical sciences.

Senate again, at its 149th regular meeting on 1st February, 2013 approved the names of the colleges as follows:

College of Physical and Applied sciences comprising of five departments as follows: chemistry, computer science, mathematics, physics and statistics. The college now has a sixth department-the department of geology which the university senate approved in 2015.

College of Natural sciences comprising of four departments as follows: biochemistry, microbiology, plant sciences and biotechnology and zoology and environmental biology. The new college took off with facilities on ground in the academic complex first known as the college of biological and physical sciences and later. College of natural and applied sciences.

On the 23rd of April, 2013, election was conducted to elect a dean for the college. At the end of the exercise. Professor Joy Chioma Nwabueze of the Department of Statistics was elected the first Dean of the new college.

The college has six (6) Departments and the Departments offer B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. degree in the relevant areas namely:

  • Chemistry Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in chemistry.

  • Computer science Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in computer science.

  • Mathematics Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in mathematics.

  • Physics Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in physics.

  • Statistics Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in statistics.

  • Geology Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in geology.

    The mission and vision of the college are derived from the overall vision and mission of the university.

    Vision

    The vision of the college of physical and applied sciences is to be the foremost college for the production of highly-rated graduates in science and technology which will leverage scientific and technological development of the nation.

    Objective

    The objectives of the college of physical and applied sciences is to provide high quality practical training for students to become professionally competent, develop environmentally friendly and people sensitive technologies to enhance the well-being of the people through extension and other intervention.
